Promissory EstoppelIf someone made you a promise upon which you relied to your detriment and they then failed to honour that promise, you could have a claim based on promissory estoppel. A common example is where person A promises to leave money or property to person B following their death in return for person B providing care or working for them, often without pay. Whilst the rules concerning claims based on promissory estoppel are complicated, in the event that person B relied upon person A’s promise to their detriment and person A failed to honour that promise after his death (for example by leaving the money or property to person C), person B could have a strong claim for compensation from person A’s estate. If you would like to discuss a promissory estoppel claim over the telephone please contact our team on 0845 3888 398 or leave your details by filling in our ‘Request a call back’ form and we will call you. |
