Setting up a charity

There are a number of benefits of forming a charity:

  • Normally no income tax on earnings;
  • No Capital Gains Tax on capital gains;
  • No stamp duty on property purchases;
  • Gifts exempt from Inheritance Tax;
  • Gift Aid relief available.

However, it is essential that proper guidance be sought to help you to decide how best to structure a new charity. A charity can be set up in one of the following ways:

  • Under a trust deed;
  • By a testator under a Will;
  • As an unincorporated association;
  • As a limited company.

We can advise you and negotiate with the Charity Commission on charitable purposes, which must fall within one of these categories:

  • The relief of poverty;
  • The advancement of religion;
  • The advancement of education;
  • Other purposes beneficial to the community,

And, of course we can help you achieve the registration of the new charity.
